Social Security vs Private Retirement
May 4, 2012
“Is Social Security a good retirement plan? Economics professor Antony Davies shows that Americans stand to earn significantly less and assume more risk with Social Security than other investment options. According to Davies, taxpayers would be better off both in terms of financial security and return on investment by investing their money privately. Social security is extremely expensive, soon to be insolvent, and doesn't even offer taxpayers the most bang for their buck. For those reasons, Prof. Davies argues that it is time for the government to phase out Social Security. Davies' solution: the government should honor its obligations to current retirees while giving Americans the freedom to invest their money as they see fit.”

Tax Time a Great Time to Evaluate Your Retirement Plan
April 27, 2012
There are many reasons why tax time is a great time make an appointment with your advisor to review your retirement accounts.
- Investment Options – Most employer-sponsored plans have limited investment options. Your advisor has access to a much broader array of investments. In addition, they will meet with you, and understand your goals and risk tolerance, which will help you select appropriate investments to achieve your goals.
- Costs – Many employees assume their employer pays the cost of their retirement plan. Each plan is set up differently and often the cost is allocated back to the funds in the plan and is often an expense to the participants. While there are costs associated with an IRA, they are generally less than costs associated with a 401k or 403b plan.
- Easier to Manage – It is much easier to manage fewer investment accounts. Today, people make career moves more than they have historically, often resulting in several small 401k accounts at a variety of employers. Most employees don’t regularly review those accounts and rebalance. However, your advisor will review your IRA account at the same time they review your other investments. The result is a better overall plan because one person is reviewing all of your investment assets. You also get the added benefit of receiving fewer statements and tax documents at year-end.
